Hobbits

Good news for all you role-play, sci-fi people that can't distinguish between fiction and reality! The distinction is becoming more vague, so dress in renaissance garb, grab your staff and dagger, and pray to your goddess! And don't forget the Magic cards!

´Hobbit was a smart little human` say scientists
"The team had found the remains of seven tiny people, including one nearly complete skull of a 30-year-old woman. They dubbed the fossils homo floresiensis. "

"The scientific community took to calling it the Hobbit after the diminutive characters in J.R.R. Tolkien's books. LB1, a female, measures at just 1 meter in height and has some surprisingly advanced features which negate an earlier theory that it was a diseased human being. "

Rules for Teachers in 1915

I'm glad times have changed. Posted by Hello

I would have never gotten a job in 1915. I'm okay with not keeping company with men, but they can't stop me from loitering downtown near ice cream stores. That's just plain inhumane.

Rachel Braves 25

Happy Birthday Rachel! Posted by Hello

Rachel has been trying on 25 since last night (at Tasty Thai). She is still alive and doesn't seem strangely older and odder, so I think I'm okay with turning 25 next month. Thanks for being the age guinea pig Rach.

Poodle Likes My Underwear

Poodle Kitty Posted by Hello

Well, this settles it. I need one of those tall looming cat towers if I am to avoid hair in my underwear. She has the face of an angel and hair like pine needles.

Come on Liz!) on Sunday. Mauri, will you be in Eugene for the green holiday? (no I'm not refering to Liz's b-day, though that's comming up) Sara, when are you done with class? Andy, what are you doing with your Spring Break? Camping with a bunch of rowdy girls? OK OK I'll call and finalize all this, for now be happy with a forward making fun of the president.. love and kittens, Adrienne and Tomas

The Last Practicum of Graduate School

Oh boy, next term is going to be challenging. In addition to three classes and an extra long seminar, I have a new class to GTF for (and a professor who will make me go to the class/actually do work), working in the computer lab, two job fairs, the ESOL Praxis (my ESL license exam), and a ten-hour per week practicum. I wrote to the teacher I'll be working with in practicum, and this was her description of the class:

"I think you'll love these first grade students. There are 20 in the class with 6 being ESL students with varying degrees of competency. We also have 2 identified Asperger Syndrone boys and some very bright and "interesting" other children. Makes for a lot of fun...and I mean that truthfully."

Oh boy, oh boy. Not only have I never actually worked with ESL kids, I have very little experience with Asperger's Syndrome and I have NEVER worked in a first grade classroom. Yikes. Yikes. Yikes.

Glossary for Non-Ed People:
ESOL
- English for Speakers of Other Languages, my graduate emphasis
Practicum- Part-time placement in a classroom where you teach small units & groups
GTF- Graduate Teaching Fellow, assisting in a college class to pay for grad school
Asperger's Syndrome- High functioning Autism
First Grade- Primary elementary grade in which students still publicly pick their noses
"Interesting"- Children that are hell on wheels

Coming Back to Life

Well, after seven days of complete submersion in the nastiest sickness that has plagued me in years, I'm starting to feel a little better. Yesterday I could taste food, sit up without feeling dizy, and I could go for five minutes without coughing something up. Now I'm looking around and realizing that my apartment has become a nest of sickness and a total wreck and I have no clean laundry, plus payday isn't until tomorrow, so I don't have money to do the laundry. Crap. So that is the update on the quarantined one. I'm sure I will be emerging socially within the week, such as by Rachel's birthday party this friday. Right now alcohol sounds like puke, so I might not be a super hard-core partier with tequilla in tow.

One Year Aniversary

More than one year now Posted by Hello

I forgot to write about this until now, but February 1st was my one-year aniversary of quitting smoking. I started smoking when I was 13 and quit at age 23. It's hard to believe that someone as young as me can have smoked for ten years. But hey, at least it's ten, not eleven like it could be. I hate to give him any credit, but Terry is totally the reason that I was able to quit. It's amazing the difference a distraction can make, not to mention the fact that hanging out with him made me get over the alcohol+cigarettes equation, which was always equivalent to enhanced hangovers. Seriously, now that I quit smoking I can drink so much before I feel the urge to stop. However, I'm not sure that being able to drink forever and ever is such a great thing, given the circumstances of last Saturday (I can't even count how many drinks I consumed that night). The fact remains- Smoking is bad, quitting is good, and I did just that. Mmmkay. And even when men are complete dickwads, there is always some miniscule thing they can do to improve your life. We'll not go in to how that one thing measures up to the things that totally fuck up your life. That's another post on another day.
